8' Tall Sasquatch for
Sneaky Squatch PDX

This summer 2026, Moni & Rick of www.GoblinArt.com are working on a piece for Sneaky Squatch PDX, a citywide immersive art hunt to find many unique Bigfoot creations hidden across Portland, Oregon during Geek Week PDX, September 11 - 20.

We are building our 8 foot tall Sasquatch from sculpted cardboard, paper mache, paper bags, and PVC pipe. The aesthetic will be similar to our PDX Monsters puppets, though with a natural coloration.

Step 1: Design & prototyping

Making marquettes to explore various designs and construction methods in a smaller scale.

Step 2: Building the Sasquatch head & eyes

Cutting out a cardboard disc, making cuts around the perimeter, then bending the cardboard into a bowl shape.

After stapling the cardboard into the bowl shape, the face was sketched and temporary eyes (made from paper mache) were added. Then facial details were added with paper mache using torn pieces of half-ply cardboard.

Next, strips of cardboard were stapled to the sides and back of the face to build out the rest of the head. Pole pockets (not pictured) were added inside to allow the head to be mounted on the top of a PVC pipe.

Next some simple ears were formed from 1/2 ply corrugated cardboard and covered with paper mache.

Some additional contouring and surface detail being added to the head along with the ears.

Meanwhile, we also started work on some fancy eyes to better match the taxidermy sets we had used on the prototypes.

Sculpting an iris from paper mache clay to glue onto a custom 3D printed eye base that will support a matching vacuuformed lens.

Step 3: Building hands

Using a video projector to enlarge Moni's cardboard hand pattern to Sasquatch proportions.

Step 4: Building feet

Step 5: Assembling the body

More body assembly documentation to come as we paper mache the torso and shoulders, and start adding cardboard and paper "hair"to the body...

Here are some of Moni's sketches from the initial design process of our Sasquatch, including from an earlier phase when we considered building a wearable Sasquatch costume to be posed on a mannequin for the art hunt. We ended up deciding against that plan since he wouldn't have been a full 8 feet tall!
