St Johns Bizarre

Rick and I at the Bizarre in 2007, photo by the Portland Sentinel
I just noticed that the local mini-newspaper The Portland Sentinel is using our photo to promote this year's St John's Bizarre!. May 9th 2009 is "Parade Day", a big day for many folks at this end of town. The 47th Annual St. Johns Parade will be rolling along N Lombard St, and the "Bizarre" will be in the St Johns plaza with performers and art vendors and food booths. As described by the Sentinel: "The Bizarre is a 'Celebration of the Strange' that showcases the unique and eclectic character of North Portland."

We'll come up with some kind of amusing plan for the day, although I don't know if we'll have a booth there this year. What I really want to do is create something fabulous for the parade (think giant puppets, or a bike-towed mini-float), but time is already slipping though our fingers and there are so many other projects awaiting my attention... We'll see what happens!

Some variation of your wind angels flying from a parade vehicle would rock.

just came across your blog, i love your work, just beautiful - the parade day sounds fab, in our local town the most we can excpect is the annual jazz brollie parade, ans most folks are too shy to participate, perhaps if they all were ale to wear masks, now thats a wonderful thought *ruthie*

Well Thirdworld, I hope you shall not be too disappointed, we're doing the Bizarre instead of the parade after all. Maybe next year (when the Sproggling is a little older) we can try and do both. And yes, something like the wind angels would be neat. Perhaps some certain individuals could be recruited to carry them in the parade? I think that they look best when "performed" (rather than attached to a car or bike).

Ruthie, thanks for your complements! Perhaps you can inspire some of your townsfolk to don masks and join the jazz brollie parade!
